Microsoft Fabric can act as both a source and a destination connection. In connection types “Microsoft Fabric” is the data source connection (grouped under databases), whereas “Power BI - Fabric” is the Power BI report connection type.

Microsoft Fabric as a Data source

PowerTester supports connecting to a Microsoft Fabric Warehouse or Lakehouse as a data source. As Microsoft Fabric is currently in Preview with Microsoft, it is also classes as preview in PowerTester.

Microsoft Fabric does not allow for SQL Authentication, therefore in PowerTester you must use Service principal authentication (note the service principal details can be stored in a Key Vault). Note unlike Power BI connections Microsoft Fabric source connections do not require the tenant Id for Service principal authentication.

Rather than a server name PowerTester expects the SQL endpoint connection string for Microsoft Fabric objects (Warehouse & Lakehouse). This can be found by following this Microsoft article.

The database name is either the Warehouse or Lakehouse name in Microsoft Fabric.

As this is a preview feature, we do not recommend for production workloads.

Microsoft Fabric as a Report connection

Microsoft Fabric can also be used as a report connection type. This connection can be used to test against visualisations held in a report in a fabric workspace. Note unlike Microsoft Fabric as a source, the only authentication method here is Master Use OAuth authentication. This is due to a technical limitation in Microsoft Fabric workspaces.
